Short answer, no, it doesn't hold up well today. But the only reason for that is every subsequent GTA has improved upon the formula GTA3 created. The best reasons to play GTA3 are for the story, characters, soundtrack, and to appreciate its significance in the history of gaming. GTA3 liberty city was an "Original" map not really mirroring any city but a handful of mid atlantic cities. But even today playing it, it feels more so like cities outside of nyc. that whole metro area just outside of NYC that consists of Hoboken, jersey city, Newark, ect.

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories , a PlayStation Portable GTA III prequel set in 1998 Liberty City. A PlayStation 2 port was released by Rockstar Games on June 6, 2006. The game a direct prequel to GTA III being set only three years before and involving the same characters and a storyline further linking the events of Grand Theft Auto Map of GTA III and Liberty City Stories with full street names.
